Puzzle Series: What is this, or what do you want it to be?

In this case, I do not know the answer and will have to defer to the flickr consensus. This photo was taken by fellow photographer Tom Zito and submitted as a puzzle.

It is an enormous Unidentified Floating Object, estimated to be about 2 miles offshore from Oahu, Hawaii.

  1. At first look, the ball seems like a weather station.

I would want it to be a kind of biosphere, side facing us being opaque, opposite side being see-through, where I could spend a year in peace, surrounded by lush greenery and rocked by the ocean waves.

Here is the one in front of my hometown. Taken by my mother on île Sainte-Hélène, part of Parc Jean-Drapeau, the former Expo67 site.

More, this time taken from the seaway park in my hometown.

So I imagine this on the ocean, right there off Oahu, Hawaii.

  2. wow. Bingo steelhive, a new winner. And a testament to the power of flickr… UFO identified in under 45 minutes. Zito in Hawaii must be feeling more safe now… 😉

or maybe not… Quote from the site linked above:
"The one drawback of SBX is that X-band radars, like all other radars, cannot see over the curvature of the earth, known as the “radar horizon.” SBX’s ability to detect incoming missiles (and discriminate between warheads and decoys) depends completely on where the radar is located in relation to the incoming missile. Thus, the closer to rouge nations and terrorist-sponsoring states that SBX is positioned, the better the odds that GMD will be able to complete a successful interception."

But I like Mimosa’s image more. Maybe SBX is a cover for some serious biosphere sea monkey business…

  3. i believe my father-in-law has been working on that…

    but i can’t confirm

    or deny that

  4. "…the closer to rouge nations and terrorist-sponsoring states that SBX is positioned, the better the odds that GMD will be able to complete a successful interception."

are "rouge nations" full of French-speaking commie-terror-fascists?! 🙂

  5. That long quote is not reassuring at all!

While I was writing my first comment, this photo was taken Biosphère 5 .

Steve, biosphere2 in Arizona is exactly what I had in mind. We cannot do that in Montréal because the cover burned many years ago so it is open space since then.

I have another idea of what I would like it to be: a giant telescope. I would love to spy on the universe from the middle of the ocean!

  6. Drat! I arrive too late, yet again!

I need to hit refresh more often, I keep missing the What’s That.

Still, saved face by showing up late to this party. I would have been off with my guess of telescope, given all the crazy imaging they do in Hawaii…

...Watcher watching the Watcher watching the Watcher watching the Watcher...

  7. Made me think of Menwith Hill straight away…
