From about a half-mile up… Half Moon Bay looks more like a crescent moon from here. You can see a faint smoke line leading up to the rear of the rocket with two fins against the sky. (update: The Wavecrest parcel of land at the bottom of the frame was just protected by POST – November 2007)

The on-board camera captures the launch and some of the parachute return. I posted the video on Revver. (mirror reflected image, no sound)

From the ground, it just roared out of sight with a motor 4x larger than it was designed for. We had a very low wind day that made recovery of the video footage possible!

Details: Estes Oracle video cam nosecone on a Blue Ninja Rocket, modified to take an Aerotech F21-8 composite motor.

  1. Cool shot, Steve! 🙂

A couple weeks ago I took this photo of the same place but from another mile or so up, on a return flight from Tokyo to San Francisco:

    Half Moon Bay

  2. wow that’s a good shot – even rotated the way you want it!

So have you registered yourself with homeland insecurity yet?!

  3. Great shot, great video. Thank you for sharing these.

  4. heh, Victor…. does a NAR L1 Cert count? I’m getting some momentum behind XPRS + BALLS this year… Not certain yet… but dreaming… Hope we can be insecure again at one or both…

Peter: awesome context shot. You are the flickrcaching pro. thanks!

  5. Awesome shot Steve! I ordered my Oracle, should have it by next week! I’m going to stick with stock for a while, but I am quite excited about switching over to your suggested modified Blue Ninja.

There will be some modifications, I am adding some blinking LED’s so I can fire and track at night. The Oracle will be coming with me to Burning Man, and I want to get some night shots of the city lights. I’ll make sure to revver the videos.

  6. sweet capture!
was that at apex, or did you launch it at an angle?
