escaping the heat on the cool coastal breeze

  1. Awesome shot, Jurvetson. I was surprised to see ISO at just 400 I would have guessed higher. Did you crop to compose? Awesome detail. The bird must have definitely been seeking relief from the heat up there.

  2. I had an interesting encounter involving pelicans and heat, I came across a group of confused and sick pelicans driving about 300 miles from the ocean in the AZ desert. Apparently this happens occasionally when they pick up the wrong wind-strem commuting from Mexico to California.

The immensity of these birds is hard to appreciate, your picture gives a good sense of scale through the details of the wings.

  3. Wow, oddwick, I’ve never seen pelicans drive. That must have been quite a sight! What kind of car did they have?

    Just kidding…

    Nice capture, Steve!

  4. Oh, for a party that size… a silver Gulf Stream RV.

Drona: yes on the crop. I was using an image stabililzer lens while standing out on the reef (actually, on the right / center of the next photo)

  5. nice shot. it feels like an illustration out of one of those older bird books. you know the ones: "Coastal Birds of North America" and the like…

  6. Great catch, a kind of overshoot !!! ..J@:L

  7. Awesome! It looks like a minutely detailed artist drawings. That is a good thing.
