I like the way this one turned out. 1/8000 sec. exposure. f4

Usually the flames start a bit farther back. I wonder if it had a recessed motor.

For anyone interested in rocket photography, a couple of us LUNAR members wrote articles with photo examples for the latest newsletter (p.7 onward)

  1. Deux à la fois!??
Does the little one stay put? Is that the firestarter? I need an explanation. S’il vous plaît.

  2. the little guy is waiting patiently in line. Each pad has a wire running to a launch control pad. Rockets are launched in sequence in banks of 6, with a slight delay between each to make sure we have a visual that last one is coming back safely.

The firestarter, well, it’s just a motivational song by Prodigy.

  3. just holding the shutter release down while pushing the launch button?
    🙂

how many frames actually had the rocket in it?
    🙂

  4. Merci pour l’explication. Maintenant je comprend et apprécie davantage l’image. C’était une journée de lancements en série! Bruit et plaisir!

Thank you for the explanation. Now I understand and appreciate the picture a lot more. It was a day of serial launches! Sounds like a noisy but fun time!

  5. oui! not too noisy, but very fun.

Leino: so you read the article. =) I was trying something new this time, and I think it worked well. I was shooting with the same shutter priority of 1/8000 sec, but I tried using the Image Stabilizing lens and no tripod. That allowed for quicker movement and composition for each launch. And the IS lens seemed to do the trick. I caught almost every rocket in frame. Out of 30 shots or so, I missed one off frame, and one was a bit early (a puff of smoke while still on the pad).

Unlike the baking soda rocket, these rockets launch slow enough to catch with the SLR. The reflex is an only child… ♫ Duran Duran

The multi-shot was really cool for the Mirage launch. I caught it on the pad, and as it screamed into the sky (panning up to get about 6 shots in frame, all in focus). They let me stay near the pad which helped a lot with the perspective from "below"…

  6. Really, really, really nice! I like this shot a lot. Kudos on a fun and unapologetically-geeky hobby.

  7. my eager Padewan…. you will soon overtake the master!
