Ray Ozzie, Microsoft: Everything on the web is being recorded.

Marisa Mayer, Google: While we store search histories, we do not correlate search with personally identifiable information. We store search history to optimize the search algorithm. For example, if you click on the third search result, it should become number one.

FORTUNE: What new space interests you?

Marisa Mayer, Google: Social networking. These people view 150 page views per session, every day. It’s Internet crack. And it’s moving from profile voyeurism to a platform for IM or photo hosting. It provides more context for people when they see someone’s vacation photos. Online presence will be a big opportunity.

Pierre Omidyar, eBay: Connect people. Let the community lead you.

Ray Ozzie, Microsoft: The Internet Singularity will arrive when the net’s collective intelligence improves its collective intelligence.

  1. interesting words..
    meantime: in my simple world..
I am having, and have been having slow internet (RoadRunner) causing viewing and comment problems..
    no crack for me..

  2. "Ray Ozzie, Microsoft: The Internet Singularity will arrive when the net’s collective intelligence improves its collective intelligence. "

Connecting this with your previous post on neural plasticty, following the analogy I believe that we are still far from this Singularity. The Internet is still expanding and opening spaces for more and more synapses… we would say that the Internet is 2 or 3 years old if it was a human being. Hasn´t yet, imo, reached its peak of development of all possible synapses between its "neurons" ( = nodes, servers, applications, users, computers, internauts).

I foresee that the Internet right now is in diapers and still needs to make a lot of noise and produce waste and try and fail before the wild interconnectivity gives room to a "prunning period" of those of synapses and all that waste, scratches, tries and noise are eliminated which lead to a more efficient use if this tool / system / intelligence / brain.

At this time the Internet will be 5 / 6 years old if it was a person. Now, here we will be able to begin to talk about "Consciousness", "reason" and "Intelligence"… the internet will be able to reflect upon itself and perhaps have a consciousness of self. By this time the "Collective Intelligence" Ray talks about, will be a fact. Yet the Singularity will be far… maturity (as I said before in the last post) is a key point here. When this intelligent being achieves a level of self consciousness enough to allow self adjustment, the Singularity will be visible in the horizon… a question of time

Possibly by that time, the Internet will be like a beautiful young lad… about 25 years old. (make the projection and this will not happen in 25 years, tho, but in more time, even though the time curve is exponential)

    What do you think?

    ——-
(I have just thought about this I said for the first time, never thought of it this way, neither read it elsewhere…. So excuse if it is a mess how exposed it… probably I´ll be back and say more. Isn´t this an extension of FORTUNE´s brainstorming anyway? =)

  3. What is the definition of social networking? I think it’s the confluence of profile voyeurism and profile exhibitionism. The internet is making people exhibit behaviors in ways that were never possible before. For example, the internet offers a level anonymity and distance that makes people behave beyond any preInternet social norms. This is the stuff (social) scientists are going to study decades from now.

There may even be social evolutionary impacts and new generations of (internet savvy, internet being) humans will evolve in ways that we possibly can’t conceive of now. It’s no wonder that Google and others (VCs) are focusing on social networking.

I agree with Alieness we may be just in the first year or two of the Internet baby’s life.

Early in 2000 the common jest used to be that kids were going to develop an extra thumb because they were so good at sending SMS messages. More seriously, I’m amazed at how some (video devouring) kids have developed senses of memory where they remember complex audio/video sequences and then when a group of them get together they have animated discussions on arcana around sounds/imagery that another generation felt out of place.

It’s easy to see some of the early impacts of the internet on the evolution of social behavior…but people might take a few more million years to develop that extra thumb.

About "moving from profile voyeurism to a platform for photo hosting": I had an interesting discussion with the foundr of a very popular photo blogging site last week and she said that the humans are the only animals that have whites in their eyes (I need to verify this) which make for humans to know where other humans are looking. This type of biological platform feature is essential to building a community discussion around a photograph.

  4. Veryyyy interesting!!!

That about the visible white in the eyes.., good observation! Don´t you find it strange when you can see an animal showing the white part of its eye… see this example… adds expression to that horse!

"Troika" is the title of this photo… relates to "perestroika" pehaps…? Means "structure"?

  5. wow, this discussion is very interesting indeed!

  6. drona: absolutely fascinating! (and what a great horse example from the visual search engine…)

    Hawkeye spiral proboscis Freeze!

    voyeur Daydreaming

So… non-humanoids would have fewer problems with video conferencing… seeing no gaze skew…

  7. Probably you have already heard about NLP -neuro linguistic programming- and their studies on the cues that eye movement gives about *how* a person thinks and feels at a certain moment (-more than their overall body language). Something that, if we hadn´t the white of the eyes visible, it could not be possible.

"The Eye Accessing Cues indicate whether a person is thinking in images, sounds, self-talk, or through their feelings. Having this information enables us to communicate in a way that more effectively matches their current thinking style. (Important: all of the Issue 8 warnings about not putting people into boxes by thinking of them as ‘kinaesthetics, or auditories or visuals apply to the eye assessing cues, too.)

"If you speak while a person is making eye movements you will interrupt their thinking and this will slow down the interaction and/or cause them to feel confused or resentful towards you. While they are accessing it is wise to wait silently and without distracting movements.

source of the extract -but there are many srouces. Really worths to read about this anyone interested in understanding functioning models of the brain and its phenotypes… -a nice theory, which best of all it can be tested in real life and see results with it. Not just an abstract "book" thing-

"NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) has been variously described as the technology of the mind…

"The name Neuro-Linguistic Programming is… the result of an attempt to describe in… this extensive body of insights and skills: Neuro refers to how the mind and body interact. Linguistic refers to the insights into a person’s thinking that can be obtained by careful attention to their use of language. Programming refers, not to the activity of programming, but to the study of the thinking and behavioural patterns or ‘programmes’ which people use in their daily lives.

  8. Alieness: Interesting points. Interesting that you bring up the topic of thinking with vision. Darwin famously studied the eye and his findings there were vigorously attacked by the creationists. Now of course we find that cells from the brain are found in the eye and vice-versa. For eg http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/medicalnews.php?newsid=15595.

Jurvetson: Along those lines, I wonder whether Google will implement an Interestingness algorithm as Flickr has done to bring highlight photos to the fore to promote community discussion….and conferencing. Speaking of video conferencing…is there a flickr for video…and will flickr evolve in that direction….

  9. Thank you Drona for that link! -didn´t know about that- =)

And Jorge too for bringing up to my "comments´ made" page this thread.

It´s interesting to see that despite details of approach, my first weird comments here are somehow connected to the latest thoughts Steve posted on the book Linked and the quote he paraphrased here so far. (sorry, I didn´t read the blog post yet, perhaps there is more connection that I can see from now).

I point to the idea of regarding the Internet as an organism in ongoing evolution and/or growth and not just as collective intelligence or consciousness in a sort of abstract way. A "being", a complex system, which is becoming more a proper object of study for biologists and neurologists and physicians rather than solely programmers and engineers.

I have never been too happy during my school days on August Comte´s approaches, his Positivism -which gave birth to Sociology as a science itself!-, for my teachers were from other academic extracts and didn´t like Comte much (in short). But I always thought that the guy was right in connecting disciplines the way he did, and in giving them such categorization (unfortunately those who came after him tangled this prime thoughts of him)

"…Comte developed a systematic and hierarchical classification of all sciences, including inorganic physics (astronomy, earth science and chemistry) and organic physics (biology and for the first time, physique sociale, later renamed sociologie).

This idea of a special science—not the humanities, not metaphysics—for the social was prominent in the 19th century and not unique to Comte. The ambitious—many would say grandiose—way that Comte conceived of it, however, was unique.

Comte saw this new science, sociology, as the last and greatest of all sciences, one that would include all other sciences, and which would integrate and relate their findings into a cohesive whole."

Back to now, therefore looking at actual organisms -as I took the example of the evolution and maturation of the human brain which was disucussed in the earlier post– by observing them under the lens of Biomimicry, will possibly give us solid clues of how will the future of the Internet unfold and (if) the ultimate Singularity Ray mentions will or will not happen -and how-.

What worries -me- is our current or future degree of (in)comprehension -intelligence- which would allow us -or not- to decypher those clues in Nature. Temporary incapability which also gravitates towards the original definition of the Singularity

"The term "Singularity" was coined by Vinge in analogy with the singularity at a center of a black hole, where our current understanding of physics breaks down; beyond the point where transhuman intelligence exists, our model of the future breaks down."

I´ll read the blog post tonight. Promise.

  10. and now she is the CEO of Yahoo

  11. Made me remember that saying….

“You know the world is going crazy when the best rapper is a white guy, the best golfer is a black guy, the tallest guy in the NBA is Chinese, the Swiss hold the America’s Cup, France is accusing the U.S. of arrogance, Germany doesn’t want to go to war, and the three most powerful men in America are named ‘Bush’, ‘Dick’, and ‘Colon.’ Need I say more?” – Chris Rock

Reality never ceases to surprise me… still.
