Bombers were flying over my home all weekend.

I caught this B-24 Liberator, the only restored one flying in the world, with the landing gear down.

“WITCHCRAFT” has 130 bomb markings and a cartoon witch flying a broom as nose art. One day she may graduate to the Telstar Logistics fleet.

  1. All weekend? Coool. This is a nice shot!

Did you get more pics too?! This perspective on a B1B or B2 would be very sweet.

  2. This is a great shot!! Good capture!

  3. Steve, forgive me if I’m wrong, but I thought there were quite a few B-24’s still flying…

Diamond Lil is still flown to airshows all over the country.

  4. Very cool. My grandfather was a tail gunner on this B-25 Mitchell in the southwest Pacific in WWII.

  5. Rocketeer: the airborne B-24 planes we see in those flickr photos are the same plane… with the older paint job. You can see the before and after here.

According to this site, the Collings’ B24 vs CAF’s Diamond Lil is explained as "This is the only B24 Liberator bomber in the world which still flies, owned by the Collings Foundation. The Commemorative Air Force operates an LB30 Liberator which was damaged during its wartime delivery flight and converted to a cargo plane without gun turrets."

And how about some flight training films. =)

  6. Steve, Thought I might see you at BG this weekend. looks like you were home in the Bomb Shelter. My daughter called me outside this afternoon in time to capture this photo.

It was one of three in a wide formation. Fun to watch and even more fun to hear.

  7. Mmmmmmmmmm. She flew right over my office the other day, and I grinned blissfully as I watched her banking toward the Golden Gate Bridge. Talk about a cheap thrill…

  8. I had the pleasure of touring this airplane in Dallas a few months ago. It’s part of a travelling airshow of 3 vintage WWII bombers, which you can go inside and tour, and on which you can actually take a 30-45 minute ride for ~$400. Sadly it was a last minute thing for us to go see them so I couldn’t schedule a trip. Though a friend got some pictures looking out the ball turret of the B17 down at Love Field. Too cool!

collingsfoundation.org/menu.htm has more info on these beautiful planes.

  9. Somehow missed this show on the weekend…lots of nice detail on the enlarged picture. Was the camera on a tripod, or were you using an image-stabilization feature of the camera?

You have some terrific shots of objects taken pointing to the sky.

  10. thanks…. I like the organic birds more…. =)

It was a hand-held pan with a 300mm zoom lens. No image-stabilization on this one (and I did not have time to remove the polarizing filter, so it is as if I was shooting through sunglasses).

I think the only reason it came out at all is that I was shooting ISO 1000.

  11. Hi, I’m an admin for a group called Worlds largest Aircraft carrier, UK 1942-45, and we’d love to have this added to the group!
