I had the most amazing dinner last night. Barry Schuler, former CEO of AOL, hosted the Synthetic Genomics team (Craig Venter, Hamilton Smith, Ari Patrinos, Juan Enriquez) at the French Laundry in Napa.

The magnum of champagne was the beginning of the surprises and delights. Here we are contemplating the sheer magnitude of a fixed menu sequence of nine courses… each paired with a different rare wine.

  1. Hola Juan, amigo!

to sum up from your caption: you ate and drank as if it was the last time. =)

  2. LOL, sounds hard to be geeky with such an agressive schedule! I suppose that’s not bad sometimes. *grin*

  3. napas: underground aquifers, one critical factor on vineyards which ultimately affect the flavour of the wine.

Fruity wines are sometimes the result of the vineyards being surrounded by fields where fruit trees grow. As the underground aquifers are shared a slight but tastable mix of flavours happen and are noticeable in the taste of the wine.

BUT, this seems to be the story behind the name. Anyway, it would be nice that you share this connection with the spanish word the next time you go… if there is anything alse more interesting to say! 😉
