The fearless American Kestrel is the only local falcon that hovers with rapid wing beats, keeping its head motionless while scanning the ground for prey.

  1. What a magnificent looking bird.

  2. Did you post-process that photo? If not, how did you get it? Great detail around the eyes and beak.

  3. Oh, a simple jump into the construct program in the Matrix….

But seriously, there was no Photoshop, if that’s what you mean. I cropped it and raised the brightness in iPhoto. The key to the lighting is that we are in the afternoon sun but under a white tent, which served as a wide-area light diffuser.

As for the sharpness for hand held shot… well, the image stabilizer is my favorite lens feature, and 12.8 megapixels gives a lot to work with. =)

  4. Wow! such a pretty beastie, as though he’s dancing..:)

  5. I’ve seen birds hovering and diving for prey in Texas. Is it likely that I saw a Kestrel?

  6. It has been mentioned before but you really are an artist! Great picture and your description sounds like a modern American poem to me.

  7. Gorgeous bird and great capture with good details for study.

    Seen in QEMD "Finch" (?)
