With all this rain, most of the rocket launches have been cancelled. So, I’ve been prepping some motors in anticipation of the next launch window.

On various rocket photos, I refer to the letter grade of the motor. On top is the common Estes C engine (300 million of these have launched). Below it is an Aerotech G engine, one of my favorites. Each letter grade represents a doubling of total impulse in Newton-seconds.

The shiny new Monster Motors are way-cool gifts from a friend (Thanks Erik!). They are reloadable H and “small I” size motor tubes, engraved with name and phone in case they go missing on reentry.

H is the largest that I have launched so far (at XPRS in the Black Rock Desert). I am waiting for the weather to improve to launch with the I motor.

  1. How often does some law enforcement figure mistake one of these for a pipe bomb?

  2. What is it about shiney metal things = fun…

Can’t wait for that launch window! Keep us posted.

  3. Have you ever been in a situation where you launch rockets on a weekend and the TSA want to swab your shoes when you get on a plane on Monday? I’d be afraid to wear the same shoes that I used for "rocketeering" and travelling…

  4. Right you are. I love the smell of AP in the morning… but not on a plane. (makes me think of Snakes on a Plane for some odd reason)

So I drove 6 hours to get to XPRS… I will try to fly to BALLS this year with only cameras on my person… and I’ve been trying to figure out exactly how much stink I’ll be bringing back with me…

B-man: shiny bling bling…. just like yer bike. =)

Jef: I try not to toss any of these their way…
