  2. So, um, I hate to be a geek spoilsport… but that would be a digital expression…

    The metal pins take the continuous curves of your face, and breaks them into discrete units, expressed in digital form by the head of the pin.

    The arguement can be made the pins themselves are analog, but so are the physical components of what we consider digital computation. The real question: is there such a thing as analog, or is it simply a matter of perspective?

    Great lighting, it looks like your robot soul is screaming through molten lava.

  5. oddwick, on the other hand, the pins have an infinite/continuous positional possibility. This would seem to be a property of an analog system.

  6. LouisL, Good point, so perhaps it is only a partial analog->digital conversion. Two dimensions (x,y) in digital, with the z left continuous.

  7. Right, it’s an analog method of capturing a digital bitmap. It tickles more too.

    But to your original question, our personal computers operate with a digital abstraction that polarizes their analog underpinnings to 0 or 1. But those analog underpinnings are themselves statistical averages of the discrete quanta of charge and magnetism of quantum mechanics.

    So analog is a matter of perspective. None of our human senses are sensitive enough to detect these discrete quanta, and so we rely on analog averages for our sense of everything, from temperature to sight.

    For example, our eyes cannot detect a single photon of light. But a frog’s eye can.

    Alieness: Seurat would sigh and say it’s just pointillist to paint with dots…
    Lichtenstein would find it chromatically comical…
