Tony Robbins is an amazing motivational speaker, even when the audience is deeply skeptical and a bit cynical going in.

At one point, he asked everyone in the audience to raise their hand if they had failed to achieve a major goal at some point in their life. All hands go up. Why did you fail? Answers come from the audience:

Time
Money
Lack of Resources
The Supreme Court (it was Al Gore in the front row!)

The room bursts into a roar of laughter, and then Tony continues. “People blame their failure on a lack of resources, but really, it’s a lack of resourcefulness.”

He then walks over and looks Al Gore squarely in the eyes. “If you showed the same passion and energy as we saw last night during the Presidential debates, you would have beaten that guy.”

The room roared even louder with applause, Gore included. It was a thought that many people had, but may not have dared to express directly. When Al Gore spoke about his true passion, global warming and the environment, he came alive at TED, and seemed like a totally different person.

After the talk, Al Gore gave him a big hug.

    March 1

    Bonne Fête!

  2. I believe that Al Gore’s experiences since the recent years have made him who he is today. Perhaps he needed this to have the passion that he has today.

Even Tony Robbins became the person we know because of some difficult times. He made a personal evolution quite early in his life but everyone has his own timeline.

  3. So… were you motivated?

  4. I like that guy.

"The real winners in life are the people who look at every situation with an expectation that they can make it work or make it better." Barbara Pletcher

"One of the reasons many people don’t have what they want is neglect." Jim Rohn

"Whether you think you can or think you can’t, you’re right." Henry Ford

    and I could go on n on… 😀

  5. Brilliant story but needless to say it makes me a little sad reminding me of an Onion article.

  6. Excellent -> passion drives our best.

  7. that’s an awesome story. thanks for posting it.

  8. ditto. i’ve always felt Tony Robbins was a bit suspect, but damn, he can sure say what needs to be said.

now if Gore will just take a stab at it again we might turn this sort of stuff around.

  9. you know, i don’t know anyone who hasn’t checked into tony at some point. including me and my skeptical posse.

  10. thanks y’all.

Ben – per your link, Gore did mention the ravages of the tree beetle… one of a numbing array of secondary effects.

I also look at my Greenland photos in a new light…
    Greenland Glaciers

  11. Indeed… If Greenland keeps losing ice at the rate its going we had better stock up on flippers. My money is looking for the people working on those problems.

  12. The world would be such a better place today if only Al had battled for the presidency. My nation would be so much better.

Thanks for this information and photo!

    (Trailer)

The director, Davis Guggenheim, is just fantastic, and I highly recommend his last film, The First Year, if you have not seen it yet.

  14. Yes! I really want to see that film.

On a tangental note, I wonder if Gore would have won if the DNC had the ballz to run this Spike Jonze directed "Day In The Life" Gore video…

  15. What a find…. Nice.

Well, Bush as finally responded to Gore’s film with one of his own

  16. Tomorrow, TEDTalks become available for free, including this one… Enjoy.

  17. Yeah, the Will Farrell bit is hilarious.

Thanks for posting about the TED stuff coming out. Can’t wait to take a look!

  18. They seem to be online already — very cool.

  19. Did you ever hear the story about his head injury?

  20. "He then walks over and looks Al Gore squarely in the eyes. “If you showed the same passion and energy as we saw last night during the Presidential debates, you would have beaten that guy.”

The room roared even louder with applause, Gore included. It was a thought that many people had, but may not have dared to express directly. When Al Gore spoke about his true passion, global warming and the environment, he came alive at TED, and seemed like a totally different person."

Indeed, during the debates VP Gore had a knack for coming up with different personalities for each occasion. In the end people wondered who he was. Tony Robbins failed to account for this bit of failure.

  21. Great story behind the picture

  22. Careful not to buy his crystal bracelets. If Tony Robbins is such a good motivational speaker, then why does he have to scam people into buying things?

  23. I used this pic for one of my articles about Tony Robbins on http://www.suite101.de. Of course your copyright was respected (you are named as source, link included).
