The BBC is back, filming at Buck’s.

Like the traffic on 101, the number of film crews showing up for breakfast at Buck’s is a barometer of the Silicon Valley bustle.

And it was a déjà vu moment. The questions about the Internet opportunities sounded eerily familiar. Cut and paste ‘Skype’ for ‘Hotmail’ in the conversation….

If the BBC is any sign, the Brits are still trying to figure out this whole ‘tolerance of failure’ thing. Many of the questions were along the lines of “Don’t you get stressed out when most of the startup companies fail?”

After discussing the bidirectional essence of Web 2.0, I had to make it manifest, and so I whipped out my camera to surprise them. I like the juxtaposition with the camera in the background. =)

  1. Nice One. We Like to See the Tables being Turned on The British Media as much over here as you Do.

  2. careful there, son, you’ll set up a mirror to infinity…

i love these stories! the mythologising of certain locations is a fascinating thing to watch over time…

seems tenuous, but i automatically think of Maryon Park from the film "Blow Up" and the transformation of that space, as a similar "palimpsest", with the intrusion of various types of recording media during and after the film giving the park an unbelievably powerful mythic quality over the years…

  3. Ah, the old microphone-in-the-pocket trick.
    Thanks for the glimpse!

  4. So, "Don’t you get stressed out when most of the startup companies fail?"

    😉

  5. So how long did it take for the bubble to blow up after the first BBC shooting ?

  6. Did you find out if the footage they took here is available online for viewing?

  7. "..after discussing the bidirectional essence of Web 2.0.."

Can you elaborate more (e.g. via J-curve) about your view on Web2.0 and what it is all about?

  8. Hans; would like to… but I have such a backlog of things I want to write about…. argh!

Rocketeer: I just got this link with more info on the program (looks like it aired tonight).

I notice Jamis from Buck’s also got in on the fun. His tall tale of the Eskimo really caught their interest. Hmm… "Nan Omo" is just "Nano Mo" or Mo Nano in disguise, methinks…

PepsiVieux: nah… it’s the only sign that we are taking enough risk…

  9. Watch it before it’s gone! The piece will be available on the BBC Newsnight site (www.bbc.co.uk/newsnight) for 24 hours. (Until 2:30pm PST Jan 5)

Sorry about the intrusive microphone..I get excited in crowded restaurants!

  10. heh… don’t we all… =)

Do you know what minute the segment starts. When I play the program I see a mention of "geek week’, but I was not sure if I was watching the right feed.

  11. thanks. The segment is up now on its own. Click on the "Geek Week" or "Dining on Innovation" video links on the BBC site here.
