Approaching apogee, with the Stanford foothills and Felt Lake in the distance…. Frame grab from the onboard video, posted here on Revver.
This was a very fun launch. I used a special composite motor with 4x the total impulse of the Estes black powder motor that the rocket was designed for (F21 versus a D12). In other words, it was a big motor in a small, light-weight rocket. I’ll check RockSim, but I think it went about a half mile up. I wonder if any other hobbyists have jammed an F into that puppy?
So… at launch, it blasted out of sight with a throaty roar, and the wind would have taken the nylon parachute to the next town…. The only reason that I could retrieve this video is because the parachute got tangled and did not fully deploy (so it came down much faster with less wind drift).
The video camera is in the nosecone and reflects off a 45 degree mirror to look down the length of the rocket.
