A hot little number…

I just love Casio digital cameras. They’re up there with Apple and Aerotech Consumer Aerospace as my favorite brands.

This one is similar to my earlier Casios but it’s half as thick… 5MP and a 3x optical zoom in a half-inch-thick camera….

  1. So many of my friends have bought the Casio Z55 after hearing me rave about it…. Here’s a little Ode to Casio…

  2. Does it play well with Macs? I’m in the market for a new point-and-shoot and looking at all options. However, I’m 100 percent Mac these days at the homestead, so it’s gotta be seamless. My Canon, which just died, worked great with Apple stuff, but this little Casio seems so much more, I don’t know, stylish and cmpact.

  3. very svelt, perfact to slip into one’s evening bag….;)

  4. Sony’s new Cybershot coming out shortly at 8.1mp is pretty tough competition

  5. Is this one a new one for you, Steve, or someone elses? I thought you had a waterproof number ordered and coming your way soon. Not to say you couldn’t have as many as you want… This one looks nice. I would have chosen red too.

  6. Rocketeer: Yup for me. I had to go back to Casio. The next photo (rocket drag race) is the first from this new Casio. Regarding the Optio WP, shhhhh…. I’m looking for some warm water to test that one… =)

Scottpartee: [updated: for some reason, the S500 did not sync at first to my Mac, but now it is working fine] The Z55 is awesome, and may be the way to go. Casios have a cradle for recharging and uploading to the Mac or PC. With no software install, it fires up iPhoto when you connect the USB plug. So no fumbling around with batteries or SD cards. I have about 10 friends using the Z55 and loving it. $284 on Amazon. (This new Casio does not do any of that… even though it also has the cradle. It even says that the videos won’t play on a Mac! But I have learned to ignore that…. Panasonic video cameras say the same thing, but ironically, their MPEG 4 ASF videos play fine on my Mac, but not a PC!)

So I guess Mac compatibility is an undocumented feature of the Casio Z3, Z55 and S500, maybe others. Apple does not list them as compatible, and the Casio box warns about Mac incompatibility. Go figure. And now Casio has a software download for Mac movies if you do run into problems with AVI files.

Andy.Parker: Regarding Sony, do you mean a 8MP version of this Cybershot? If it’s the same lens and 1/1.8” CCD as the 5MP and 7MP versions, I would not wait. Unless you know that you need 8MP for enlargements, you’ll probably get more light per pixel with the lower pixel count CCDs (and low light shots are Sony’s weak spot). Beyond 5MP, I don’t think more pixels is always better, if all else is equal in the camera design. One other minor drawbacks of this one IMHO: a 2” LCD is much less functional than a 2.5" LCD (once you’ve tried a 2.5", it’s hard to go back).

Sony is the one company that I would suggest you be cautious with for pocket cameras. They have a good reputation for other consumer electronics, but many of their small digital cameras have been very disappointing so far (specifically their ability to take a decent picture indoors).

I have not used Canon, but my friends with it are happy. I recommend Casio Z55 or Z750 for 7MP, and the new Lumix FX-9 (old ones had poor battery life; I compare it to Casio here). For those outside the U.S., the Ricoh Caplio R2 takes a mean macro and goes wide angle. And Pentax has a good specialty camera, the Optio WP, for 1cm macros and underwater shots.

  7. it’s always nice to see someone geek out about cameras, who subjects them to similar abuses as myself, though I admit I prefer lamp oil and white gas to rocket engine
