I did not recognize most of the cars on the road or even the car companies. This one, a CEO, looked similar to a BMW X5 from all sides.

In 2005, China’s passenger car market is expected to become the third largest in the world.

  1. It’s a Shuanghuan CEO, it looks like BMW X5 from back and Toyota Land Cruiser / RAV4 from the front and inside. But as I understand it has a fairly good price, 12-14 kEUR. The drivetrain and engine at various models has been Ford, Toyota and Mitsubishi.

They also have a copy of Honda CR-V called Laibao 🙂 Honda has sued them, and there are also other lawsuits in China about car design copyrights.

  2. I wonder which came first, German autos evolving to apeal to the Chineese market, or Chineese autos evolving to look like Germans.

  3. After seeing this frightening crash test, you won’t find me in a Chinese SUV anytime soon.

  4. stop by the Shanghai Science and Technology museum’s robots exhibition and you can even find the Chinese copy of Albio. I hate to admit, the pug/terrier-esque design of the chinese ones is a lot cuter than Sony’s =)

  5. wow. thanks for the links.

JKaljundi: the vehicle I saw looks a lot like an X5 from the side (from the running boards to the horizontal bend line and wheel wells, etc.) even more so than the rear. I did not see the front. I should have tried to get a photo, like Victor1 and I did here:

It sounds like Shuanghuan may have a few mimics going.

  6. You are kidding, Billy The Kid, right? I think there is no need to use "evolve" in this context.

  7. Hehe, you’re right. Maybe "Pandering" and "Photocopying" would have been better terms.

  8. For more crash test astonishment, see the moving picture equivalent of Flickr for the terms: "china crash test"

  14. i know they make shit. amercian cars are shitty. but so are those plastic filled chinese cars

  15. years ago americans said the same thing to japanese cars, now look around and count how many toyota and honda are there in your neighborhood. at least chinese cars consume less gas and contribute less to global warming than their american counterparts. alright, i don’t need to convince you of anything, time tells everything. stay cool christian, and… ciao

  16. haha funy u mentioned that actaully there are more european cars in my neighbor hood then there are asian.

just tot provide an example. front nieghbors, volvo/ chevrolet, on the right volvo/BMW/volvo on the left mercedese benz/ lexus

hmmmmm totally asian cars are dominating the WORLD!!!! hahahahaah

funny how you mention china as a "green" nation, when they are the worlds highest contributor to creating more global warming

  17. One neighborhood’s market share is a curiosity. The actual global market share is easy to look up….

Global auto market share, but that was 2007 as of this posting.

A lot changed in 2008. Toyota just passed GM to be the largest manufacturer (news), and last month, the Chinese auto market became larger than the U.S. market (news)

  18. i know. i live in san diego pretty much one of nations most expensive cities
