This company dormitory houses over 200 people, six to a room. The rent is 50 cents a day.

Lunch and Dinner at work is free at the company cafeteria. There is an hour long nap after lunch on the floor, and in the cubicles. Soft music starts to play and grows in volume when it is time to wake up.

  1. No matresses.

There is something very disturbing about this image. The "assembly line" tag resonates in me, I guess. =(

    And 1984 flashes.

  2. to understand this, you have to see how their relatives live (or how they lived before getting their jobs here). I’m not sure what conclusions to draw, but they may be different from what you would think at first. I once visited an apartment in Hong Kong where about 12 people of all generations lived in a single room, which makes this look like luxury. Nuclear family, or forced togetherness?

  3. A fascinating series of pictures. Thanks for posting these.

Obviously frightening for some of us, but these people seem to be smiling genuinely. Perhaps their upbringing has prepared them for this?

Has anyone read David Mitchell’s novel "Cloud Atlas"? One of the chapters paints a terrific dystopian synthesis of Kim Jong Il style totalitarianism and McDonalds/KFC capitalism.

Looking at these pictures perhaps his dystopia is OTM.

  4. This is a tempting subject to me. One of those topics I may discuss for days, trying to find an answer to fit in my heart. There is something very wrong with the world. And still, can´t get used to it.

As I was reading your words, and looking at my own feelings, having an overall impression, I recalled cynically that song from Sir Paul.

When you were young and your heart was an open book,
You used to say live and let live.
(You know you did, you know you did, you know you did.)
But if this ever changing world in which we live in,
Makes you give in and cry…
    Say live and let die.
    (Live and let die.)
    Live and let die.
    (Live and let die.)

What does it matter to you?
When you got a job to do you gotta do it well.
You’ve got to give the other fella hell.

You used to say live and let live.
(You know you did, you know you did, you know you did.)
But if this ever changing world in which we live in
Makes you give in and cry,
    Say live and let die.
    (Live and let die.)
    Live and let die.
    (Live and let die.)"

I have a lot to learn from it. But, do I want to learn this?

  5. Alieness..if I may, in the end, the preservation of our unique humanity will prevail. I believe that with all my heart. But the trip to the end, won’t be a day in the playground

  6. *big comforted smile*

thanks for that. a ton. =)

  7. I agree with Esther, Alieness. If you get a chance, go see "Made in China" (I think this was the name of the indy film about where Mardigras beads come from). This photo looks like a luxurious hotel suite, comparatively.

  8. Alieness: matresses are very much a part of our western culture, so the absence only tells you we are not in Kansas any more. Blame the romans for our obsession with ‘soft’ beds.

and hey, 50 cents a day? sign me up!

  9. Don’t they only earn $1 a day, if so 50 cents rent for a room shared with 6 others is not cheap.

  10. I just got back and saw a dormitory in a new high tech park in Dongguan. It’s 33 cents/day there, and 8 people share 300 sq. ft.

I was also struck by the enormous size of the new bus station. Each day, streams of buses bring day workers in from remote areas.

  11. Alieness, you wouldn’t want a mattress in a room without air conditioning in summer of Dongguan. it’s just too hot……
