When they come in hot, you hear the sonic boom after it hits.

I spent much of this weekend tracking incoming rockets or pieces of rockets. Most common cause of lawn dart failures is a lack of chute deployment at apogee. Second most: fin shreds at Mach 1 or 2, which are spectacular to witness. Lastly, the unstable multi-stage pinwheels in the sky are the scariest, as they might ignite the second stage while the nose is pointing down, with the rocket screaming back at you under full thrust. I have done that at home, and it takes the cake for raising the pulse rate.

I saw a high power 2 stage rocket do such a pinwheel loop, but end up point straight up when the 2nd stage ignited. The cheers on the video are a real treat.

  1. I’d hate to have to explain this to my insurance adjuster! Maybe its covered under collision?

  2. Certainly not an "Act of God"… so it should be covered under a "comprehensive" policy (deer, rocks, rockets)… A more interesting argument could be made for simple "collision" coverage… =)

  3. 2nd stage backfired..
    ooops
    O_o

  4. BUH, that’s some intense stuff. Pulse raising would be the least of it! Wowee. You aware any human or animal fatalities from this kind of failure?

  5. sorry for the delay… no, not even an injury. There are good safety precautions regarding distance from the pad that make it better than driving, IMHO.

  6. That is soooo wild, these things are happening so fast, even at 100 yards, or 1000, it could be there in under a second if it pointed the wrong way under power.

  7. If it was just the windshield his cost would be lower than the deductible. In which case, notifying the insurance company only raises his rates.

[edit] Scratch that, I just saw the next photo

  8. re Collision vs. Comprehensive.
My insurance company explained it this way: if it on the ground when you hit it, that’s covered under Collision. If it is in the air, that’s covered under Comprehensive.

a guy in Timmins could have used those insurers when the moose fell off the chinese laundromat unto his sports coupe
