   This is the first stage, and despite the strange side flare, it ignited the second stage just fine.

   …a good "bat out of hell" effect….

    sure looks like one, but no… It flew without incident if I recall.

    I’m guessing that there is a special blast shield redirecting the exhaust to protect the delicate glider…
