Awesome tour of DreamWorks today… Played around with the tablet used for Shrek2 scenes.

With the march of Moore’s Law, the realism and effects get better and better. They now model multiple layers of clothing with friction and slip between layers.

And all the new movies will have simultaneous renderings of 3D versions (for the 3D glasses crowd). For the original Shrek, this conversion took quite a bit of human effort, and was ultimately not released.

Seeing the racks of HP blades rendering movies frame by frame reminded me of my PIXAR job interview 10 years ago (they used racks of Sun workstations then). PDI DreamWorks also engages all of the networked desktop PCs as a distributed server farm.

  1. I am extremely fond of that render farm. It makes my pictures for me every night, bless its Opteron heart.

  2. yeah, computer technology is great, isn’t it?

Kinda sexy to me as well… (don’t get me wrong, I still get aroused only by sexy females *-)

  3. I like that they’re producing these in 3-D, because many if not most of the theaters these days that are running two-projector 3-D rigs meant for LCD or polaroid glasses… are IMAX theaters. Face it most movies look better when they’re 60-80 feet wide.
