A drop of water in the sun.

The blue material is hydrophobic sand. This is bizarre stuff to play with. Small amounts will float on water; larger amounts sink and push the water to the top.

For the geeks: Hydropobic sand is normal sand treated with the vapors of a silicone compound (trimethylhydroxysilane), which makes it “water hating” (like oil and water). In fact, the original use of this product was to soak up oil from ocean spills. The hydrophobic sand and oil clump together for easier cleanup.

It can also be used to keep sand bags dry (and lightweight), to repel freezing water from underground cable, or as a water-proof fabric treatment.

Thanks to the TED Conference and Inventables for supplying these unusual materials.

  1. How funny, I come across this picture listening to ELO´s "Midnight Blue".

Meniscus. I know someone who will soon have the most expensive ones in the whole Milky Way. Should I ask the Inventables for a quote?

    duh.

  2. interesting fact… didn’t know it looked so good too =)

  3. Beautiful shot. It is an amazing material. Doesn’t it pollute oceans when it’s used to clean oil?

  4. beautiful, like blue gems, gorgeous colours.

  5. Steve, is the blue color an artifact of the conversion to hydrophobic sand or is it already blue before it is treated?

  6. Wild stuff! How expensive is it to purchase?

  7. Oooooh, that’s a fun site, like Edmund scientific’s educational stuff.

Hmm, now I have to come up with a reason to have some! *grin* (I don’t have the all encompassing kid justification, ooop! :D)
