the proud bounty of the slug hunters….
something needs to be done about slug infestation of humans!
i hears some evil people inject slugs in their intestines in order to stay thin, a practice i feel horrorific.
aaaaaaaah..! are those slugs real?!! oh my god!!! they’re so scary!! once i’ve seen a horror movie i think it was called Slugs, they kill people and stuff :S eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee…
"and stuff…" What kind of stuff? =)
This seems to be a humor-evoking image….
Yes, these are real banana slugs (the 2nd largest and the fastest of the slugs, but that’s not saying much. They also have no known predators, other than little boys. They are also the UC Santa Cruz mascot).
Little nature tip: slug trails are continuous lines of slime and snail trails are intermittent.
Sharl: The shirts…. Yes. They were a total mess. The first clue came when one boy ran back to the picnic out of breath to get some water. I noticed that the whole front of his shirt was stuck together in a mucous wall. I asked if they were slug hunting. Sure enough, they came back later with something heavy cupped in their shirt pouch, and I took a photo of the unveiling….
I find that the slime washes out OK. This might vary by species? For example, from the book Biomimicry: "Mussel adhesive works underwater and sticks to anything, even without a primer. ” (97)
That slug is gigantic, and the comment made by * = F ( * ) ; is just horrific. Yet, I love the picture.
I was thinking the same thing, Vanita. At first, I thought it was a clever T-shirt design. Looking at the color and the size, I see how they got their name of banana slugs. The shot has an "Alienesque" quality, doesn’t it? Reminiscent of a face-hugger…
Looks like rotten bananas.. Ewwk, but still kind of facinating.. The slugs around here is nothing like that.
This is the first picture on flickr that has actually made me scream, congratulations! 🙂
battered and deep fried, it should be a winner at any country fair in the US. ick. nice shot! it will definitley give me nightmares. :O))
Hi, I’m an admin for a group called Youth Nature Watch, and we’d love to have your photo added to the group.
I have never seen anything like that…. Glad I don’t have those crawling around my house.
