“there is a silent revolution in solid state lighting (SSL) that has the promise of replacing conventional light sources in the way integrated circuits replaced electron tubes fifty years ago.

It is estimated that by 2025 SSL could reduce the global amount of electricity used for lighting by 50%; no other electricity consumer has such a large energy savings potential.”

  1. It’s cool to see solid state lighting in action. I went to an interesting nanotech panel at the Commonwealth Club in SF last week, in which Ron Mosso of Nanogram spoke about SSL and the potential energy savings in architectural lighting (something like 5x the efficiency and 100x the life of traditional methods).

  2. like the colours
would love to have something like this in my new home =)

  3. Awesome. So will it be available to consumers around 2025? or only by then it will be so widely spread to help reduce the electricity used for lighting by half?

I think this post is grammar hell. Sorry, I’m sleepy 🙂

  4. Nell: As I understand it, the reference to 2025 is an estimation that by then SSL will be so widely used (and cost-effective, given decreasing tech costs and increasing energy costs).

There’s a summary of the DOE document that Steve referenced here (PDF). Another way of looking at the energy savings before 2025 is this:

"The cumulative savings potential in the US alone over 2000 – 2020 could amount to:
    – Saving 16.6 Quads (760 GW) of electrical energy
    – Eliminating 258 million metric tons of carbon emission
    – Alleviating the need of 133 new power stations (1000 MW each)
    – Cumulative financial savings of $115 Billion (1998 dollars)"

  5. Thanks complexify! I’m glad, that means it will be available soon. I imagine it won’t be too cheap at first, but it is good to have more environmentally friendly alternatives.

  6. very catchy! love the hue.
