Naked Nokias: the 5165 on the bottom is the oldest, with bulky, less integrated components populating both sides of the board. Moving up to the 3360, and the 3595, all of the electronics are on one side of the board, under the metal shielding. The other side of the board has the receptors for the buttons.

  1. Cool illustration. I can’t see for sure, but I’d hazzard a guess that the boards are getting progressively thinner?

  2. This photo makes me wish I had saved my very first cell phone, an analog Nokia 121 (their second model, I believe, after the 101):

It’d be an interesting fourth row for this pic, as it was thick enough to fit more than two sides of components on the board. 😉

  3. I have a 3360. I think Nokia has had the lead for some time in user friendly cellphones. The menu structure was so well deisgned from the begining, it also makes you comfortable with every new phone you get.
New phones have new features, but they’re all fitted nicely into the existent concept. And the Nokia tdma phones I’ve used are the best in switching from system to system in long distance travelling. Although it’s old tecnollogy now, but gsm here in Argentina suffers the problems every new technology does: they sell the phones first, then make the real investments in antenna infrastructure (if they get to sell enough phones!). If you do travel a lot, gsm phones suck!

  4. hahaaaa
    more disassembled stuff
    :p

  5. Beautiful! A whole hierarchy of angels. Its like art work. (I can say that; I studied Architecture). I still have my first Nokia flip (1999). Its awesomely gigantic. Too attached to allow an autopsy. (BTW after much research, ordered Sync and buying myself Godel for my bday Fri.)

  6. Keep up the good work. Thanks.

  7. very cool; I like being able to trace the layers of the engineering through image. I actually ran across this in the macro gallery, and thougth I’d mention that while it’s very cool, it’s not a macro photograph.

  8. dcJ; good point. I’ll remove it. Here’s an extreme macro shot to restore the balance. =)

  9. mmm, crackers and tarts

  10. Hi, I’m an admin for a group called Naked, Undressed, Exposed Electronics, and we’d love to have this added to the group!

    Excellent picture.
