There was a growing smell of dead fish in our lobby. I followed my nose to a cabinet door, opened it, and almost fell over.

Here is the scene of the crime, five months ago!

  1. Ummm… Ew. This was definitely photographed in OdorVision.

  2. There might be a cancer cure growing there… yes, I’m sure of it!

Why did you have to post this at lunch time? ;-]

  3. How Poe-esque! Also makes me remember of that episode of the Simpsons were Lisa grows a small civilization in a tea cup.

  4. Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrggghhhhh!!!!

    *faint*

  5. I thought it was a huge bloated fish by the looks of it on the thumbnail. Thankfully it isn´t. Fungus, spores.. hm. Cheese comes to mind.
    Let´s have lunch!

  6. Cinderella was late!

  7. Eeeeeewwww, science experiment! So, you didn’t notice the ick on the floor?

Might have made a good guess game! *grin*

  8. Looking at the thumbnail, I first thought that this was a new puzzle, picturing the melted and scorched remnants of a volleyball or basketball put in a microwave oven by some precocious mad scientist…

It turns out that the subject matter was 100% organic, then. Are you sure your co-workers haven’t concealed any more dead bodies in your offices’ cupboards ? 😉

  9. A funny fungus among us!

Ben: the ick was a clue. Only a drop was on the ground, and it was sticky to the touch…. but it was a clue…

nhr: who knows? Here’s a strange thing: there was another pumpkin on a shelf right above this one (in the same dark space). But it was in perfect condition and was firm all the way around. Looked brand new.

  10. Pumpkins have a remarkably protective skin, but once that’s compromised, they really go to pieces — if you take two identical (you know, within reason) small pumpkins and give one a little cut, the cut one declines quite quickly and gets thrown out. The uncut one you find a year later in a drawer, slightly dessicated but intact. I have no doubt that this pumpkin looked pretty good for quite a long time before it was busted by the fuzz, and can fully believe that there’s one still intact.

As for the one that’s intact, I’ve got some arborio rice, an onion, some white wine and veggie stock… Spring’s not too late for winter veg risotto, right?

  11. That’s better than some mystery critter dead inside your wall. Trust me.

I like how the boss took it upon himself to hunt down the foul smell.
It reminds me of being a mom.

  12. hi there jurvetson .. this is at least the second photo that you’ve submitted to squared circle that we have rejected.

please read our group’s description and visit our group pool before submitting to the group again.

    thank you.

  13. OK. They are all gone now. I quit the group.
    Too square for me. =)

  14. not all circles need to be squared circles, afterall.

    there’s always flickr.com/groups/ring/ , afterall.

    and asymetric circle too!

  15. Oh, from a gestaltic point of view the rotten pumpkin was a far more interesting squared circle!

  16. deja vu…
we had something simillar occur at our house not too long ago. the kitchen smelt for a couple of weeks before i found a bag of forgotten potatoes rotting at the back of the cupboard. the yuck factor was the stinky brown liquid that leaked out (quite similar to the above i guess)… with some white wormy ‘things’ squirming around… ewwwwwww yuck…….>P

  17. Uh, those would be maggots.

  18. did you return it to the desk of the rightful owner?

  19. This still cracks me up.

  20. Should we send it to you?
    P-)

  21. Ewww! I mean, no thank you.
