Ants generally attack any ants they meet from foreign colonies…

So my office pets rushed to the screen, perhaps a bit confused by the apparition of their giant likeness

What does this have to do with my earlier post? Well, at ISSCC 2003, Gordon Moore showed that for every ant in the world today there are 100 transistors.

  1. Wow, those are some happy ants. They’re still living after a month! (Wow, that puzzle seems longer ago than just a month…)

  2. How funny! AntWorks logo has exactly Microsoft´s fonts. And it is stepping on a Mac. That´s why the ants are being so beligerant.

oh! btw, r you telling me that each time I kill an ant -which is often- I am tearing Gordon´s theory down?

Never thought it could be that easy…

  3. I think the expected lifespan of the harvesters is "less than two months" but typically greater than one month.

Heh, only an ant can look at another ant 20 times its size and think "Hunh, I can lift that, no problem," instead of, say, "RUN FOR YOUR LIVES!"

  4. Well, before you get too distraut over just the number of transistors, I’m pretty sure that the number of bacteria and viruses FAR far FAR out strips the number of transistors, so I think the size of object enters into the effect we have on the planet.

That said, yes, yes we are having a big effect on planet earth. Just ask the rain forests, just ask the fish in the sea.. (edit, snip) Oops, sorry Steve, was grandstanding on your bandstand…

  5. Sunburn: nice. starting ant fights over the Internet. =)

Eppie: they are eating a gel developed by NASA. As for taking over, Agent Smith speaks for the pox viruses: "Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet, you are a plague, and we are the cure."

BenODen: Yup. Craig Venter adds: “There are about 5*10^30 microbes on Earth. The Archaea alone outweigh all plants and animals… One milliliter of sea water has 1 million bacteria and 10 million viruses.”

  6. I’m just glad that the underapppreciated substances, like gel, have their very own conference now. =)

It’s a great gel product. They are fun, zero-maintenance office pets.

I strongly suggest the $3 tube of 25 harvester ants. If you can time the order, perhaps you could give a tube of ants to each person too.

    lol!

Hey, now I do too want my space ants, but I don´t think they´ll make it down here. 40 days ocean or 2 days air, but will they resist pressurization? On the other hand, animals´ imp/exp is prohibited by Customs…

I guess I´ll have to move to the states.

  8. Far be it for me to stop you from moving to the states, but I think they’d survive the pressurization– the cold could be a problem– though they are cold blooded and would slow down substantially, they can also freeze to death.

I agree that the major hang-up is exporting a life-form, even one that cannot breed, to another continent– Life Studies and Argentine customs will have a problem with that.

However, Argentina does have harvester ants; perhaps you could catch them with some sugar. Then just pop them in the fridge for 10 minutes so they’ll be too dopey to care that you’re transferring them to the ant-farm.

  9. Sunb, thank you for this enlightenning comment. I could try some ant hunt. Ants and I do have a close relationship and we live together in harmony… until they become way too many sniffing around everything. Then the antcide begins, but in general terms, we are friends. You see, there is a problem with my building and ants. They keep them controlled but you share your space with some from time to time. These are black and very small, tho. They don´t look like yours or Steve´s. And I don´t know if it is because the ones I come to see are scouts or what, but they seem to be so bewildered. And those there look so smart. My ants are a disappointment.

Moral: we always want what we don´t have.

  10. All I can say is superb image!

  11. Here is a very cool article and experiment on Ants.
I thought you could like it Enjoy ; )

BBCNews- Exploring the virtual ant colony.

Ground-penetrating radar has been used to nondestructively map an ant colony for the first time.
The results have been digitised and fed into an interactive visualisation system so that the colony can be explored virtually…..
