The honey bees and the ants that you see above ground… buzzing around and doing all the work… well, they are all female.

The male bees are drones, lacking stingers and the structures needed for pollen collection. In the autumn they are ejected by the colony to starve, and new drones are produced in the spring for mating.

  1. ..hmmm, and your point is? *grins* An appropriately fitting offering for International Women’s Day (March 8, 2005), of course!
(These are probably my fav of all flowers, Steve. I adore this shot.)

  5. very pretty flowers 🙂

  6. too right – I’ve even seen the workers chewing the drones’ wings off in the autumn so they can’t get back in the hive. Not a good model for human behaviour. Would you like to join Honeybees and Beekeeping?!

  7. good suggestion. And thanks y’all for the happy buzz.

  8. What are these flowers?

  9. a type of cherry blossom, I think…. It looks a bit different from the cherry trees we have.

  10. this image, revisited, still resonates , it’s a beauty, they understand teamwork instinctively (except the part where they starve, that’s awful)

  11. I’ve added this photo to my Nature Wallpapers blog and the photo is automatically set as wallpaper for the people today. (The post is here.)
