Mickey Hart, the Grateful Dead drummer, led us in a drumming circle on the beach. He described the trance rituals from West Africa as handshaking to the archaic.
Mickey Hart came to guest lecture a popular music course I was taking at UC Santa Cruz to fill some units. It was something I’ll remember for a while. He was a real inspiration and true music afficianado. People learned more from him in that talk than they did in the surrounding month of regular coursework.
It’s great to see that he is still active within the community and expanding hiz horizons even further than before.
During his guest lecture at UC Santa Cruz, Mickey spoke of time spent with Egyptian and African drummers in the late 70’s that involved long drumming sessions followed by ingestion of local, tribal substances that induced a trance of a whole other variaty.
