An old and weary photo of the Yellow Team at Pinnacles… having just won a 21 hour scavenger hunt, called simply, The Game.

You can see the makeshift bike rack on the van roof and the bulky cell phone that we rented in Ric’s hand. There is something about the adrenaline of a overnight race that bakes each of the puzzles in memory… crawling through the sewers of Los Gatos, snorkeling in the frigid waters of a quarry to find an underwater clue, shimmying across a red rope tied high between two power pylons near SFO, calling the Stanford computer center at 3am (reaching someone!) and having them quickly solve a 17-order polynomial equation, shooting at a helium balloon as it rose into the sky with our next clue, chasing a car that delivered an encrypted message on a streaming LED display, climbing surreal seaside artillery ruins…. Both from an old site

From the Wikipedia entry on The Game, it looks like this game we played pre-dated any of the ones listed.

  2. Wow. That’s cool. And really really intense. The power pylon bit seems the furthest out there, but, it totally seems like the engineer’s marathon. (An eco challenge grade competition would be a week long.)

  3. I bet that was fun! Thanks for sharing it with us…

I saw you in the video about a minute into the clip!

  4. Tell me that shirt is hypercolor!

  5. That was a great race. You crushed us. During a low moment in BARF, my team mate Bob Glouberman (now an actor in Hollywood) passed a car on a double yellow line. In order to make my annoyance very clear I grabbed his hair and pulled it backwards (keep in mind we had been running for 20 hours by then). This was not the wisest thing to do to the driver. He expressed his annoyance in return. Screaming ensued. Come to think of it, no wonder we lost.

Ben: Right you are. When our guy was out in the middle fetching the clue… hanging upside down about 30 feet up in the air…. with his legs and arms hanging on the horizontal taut rope… suddenly, one end of the rope came untied (or snapped), and he started swinging down like Tarzan back toward the other pylon that still had the rope attached.

He was smart to let go and drop into the shallow water and muck below….. a soft landing.

  7. Wow. Uh, so, he got to trek through the muck to get the clue? Or did he get a "heart pounding" repreive?

  8. Still had the paper clue clutched in his hand, if I recall… Major hero points.

  9. Awesome! I’ve read about The Game before. Sounds super fun.

  10. Your blogs and each of its stuff is so pleasurable and valuable it is making me come back soon.
