roof of a temple in Singapore

  1. Steve: do you remember the name of this temple? Your photo made me dig up this old photo that I had been thinking about recently. Looks like the paint may have faded a bit in the past few years.

I remember going inside the temple, taking off my shoes, and the smell of the incense, but that’s about it.

  2. Great one! It’s an excellent work

  3. Oh the places you go to! ๐Ÿ˜€

    That’s just… I wanna go!

  4. wonderful!
complexify: That’s the one. There are some interesting figures off to the side as well. This one is to the right.

  5. Skyscraper and Temple

same temple in singapore!… someone else on flickr and i figured out about where it was because i saw his shot of it at this link:

    … ๐Ÿ™‚

  6. Complexify: I take it back!
Adrasteia9 and you may have captured the same temple, but his shots reveal several differences. I visited a different temple that happens to have a similar looking roof (scale efficiencies in temple building?).

This may also explain why the color fade seems a bit extreme for just a 2 year gap between our photos.

  7. Interesting! While I’m sure these temple tops aren’t pre-fab, I guess there would indeed be economies of scale in producing the various components. ๐Ÿ™‚ The figures off to the side seem to be quite different between the two, however.

Adrasteai9’s link to Biketrouble’s photos brought me to this exterior shot that confirmed his temple was the same as the one I visited. Thanks for posting this photo, as it made for some interesting detective work. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  8. No prob complexify! i just think its neat to run across this kind of stuff…

  9. The part of the temple photographed here is called a ‘Gopuram‘ which is usually at the entrance of a temple.

The kind of gopuram photographed is very typical in South Indian temples and the sculptures on top of these gopurams are very different (depends on whether the temple is for Vishnu or Shiva)

Here is another flickr photo of a Gopuram from a Temple dedicated to Minakshi who happens to be the sister of Vishnu and wife of Shiva!
