Puzzle Series: What are the irregular shapes, or what do you want them to be?

  1. Maybe thin ice forming on the surface of a pond?

  2. I’ll guess waves, rippling from a fountain, reflecting palm trees. Blue may be due to either the camera filter, exposure or the color of the bottom of the pool.

  3. I’d also guess rippling waves or perhaps elongated bubbles from a fountain.(It’s not cold enough there for ice, right?) 🙂

  4. I’ll say a clear blue plastic pool cover, with waves of the pool causing it to ripple.

  5. I’ll go for a variation on BenODen’s: I think it’s an opaque blue tarp lumped up on top of some dirt or something, with puddles on top.

  6. It is strange. If this is water, shouldn´t the reflection of the vegetation be distorted according to possible "waves" or "ice pieces" in motion? It seems to me like you are looking at a garden and there is some sort of "blue thing with irregular shapes" in between. Mmmm.

  7. The hood of a car being washed.

  8. I like BenODen’s and ranjit’s answer. It’s possible that the photo is flipped 180 degrees to throw us off, however.

  9. Many elements of truth here…. But the white parts are not water or ice.

Artwitness: yes, there is a reflection of palm trees. =)

And there are correct elements in the guesses of complexify, BenODen, ranjit, and Alieness….

And yes, Rocketeer, we are flipped 180, but that never throws you off…. =)

  10. AH, ah! How about a blue plastic protector sheet on a new LCD screen? The white is where the light reflects off the surface of the plastic instead of the screen behind?

But wait, WOE is me, it is taken from some distance…

  11. ummmm…. looking out through a window or sunroof whose tinted coating is old and blistering?

  12. Zenera: "scum" may be in the eye of the beholder. =)

I bolded an important clue above. The key word there is "and"… The fusion of two of the early half-right guesses would nail it…. Most of the early guesses are compound sentences; parts of them are right and other parts are not….

  13. As Alienness pointed out, no distortion of the reflection, so there is a flat side. Then there is one not quite flat 🙂 Makes me think of imperfections due to bubbles found at the edges of acrylic plates, the "direction" given by the escape of gazes produced during polymerization. Then, if there is some additional element, protective film that may give the blue color.

  14. Ok, lesse if this is the correct assemblage of facts. Is it a picture of the reflection of trees reflected in mirror tinted window covered by a blue plastic protective sheet. The bubbles are air beneith the plastic, reflecting the light before the window tint can?

  15. Good to have you back L’Inspecteur, and very creative!

I added some more bold above, and should perhaps clarify that two of the first 8 guesses almost got it…

So, roll back to your earliest thoughts…. 😉

  16. Ok, let me try this again by fusing a part of my original answer with BenODen’s first guess:

The irregular shapes are bubbles of air underneath a plastic covering and above the water below. Well, that’s what I want it to be, at least 😉

  17. 🙂
wanted to describe almost the same thing as complexify
all I can add is, plastic covering the kind one can find in greenhouses

  18. Bingo Complexify, a new winner, and thanks to all the new participants. Big partial credit also is due to ranjit and BenODen.

Ranjit’s first guess of “an opaque blue tarp lumped up on top of some dirt or something, with puddles on top” and Ben’s first guess of a “a clear blue plastic pool cover, with waves of the pool causing it to ripple” were the closest. A fusion of those two guesses is correct.

It is an opaque blue pool cover, with water on top, and air bubbles from below raising the blue plastic above the water in the regions ringed with white. The white parts are juniper pollen that dusted the dry plastic before the rain came. Now it collects around the bubbles like sandy beaches ringing an island. The water on top of the cover is reflecting the palm trees and greenery in the distance.

So there is no motion (waves or ripples).

The other correct elements in the early guesses are:
    Complexity: elongated bubbles
Alieness: a garden reflection in water.
Zenera: scum… perhaps as in the scum rings in a bathtub. And the pollen that blows in our eyes…

  19. Congrats Complexify!

I was so stuck on it being transparent from the color! The white around the edges was also very tricky. Is it really that cool cobalt blue!? What a nice color for a pool cover. The sky blue for a typical cover is over used! 😀 Especially since it’s not the propper sky blue. Haha.

    Great puzzle! Thanks!

  20. It’s dark blue (which helps with passive solar heating). The parts above water are the true color. The bright cobalt is a mix with the paler blue of the sky.

  21. Complexify, great for puzzles and for aereal photography. Congrats. =)

I´ve just come across with this, you playful people will enjoy it:

"“I love Mickey Mouse more than any woman I’ve ever known.”
    – Walt Disney

    Genius of geniuses.

  22. Wow, thanks everyone for the congratulations and warm welcome! 🙂 I couldn’t have done it without the other guesses and hints. Collaborative guessing is a fun process.

jurvetson: thanks for the great puzzle!

Alieness: nice Disney quote! Although it makes me feel a bit sorry for his wife Lillian and their daughters. 😉

  23. yeah, u right, hope there are no feminists around… 8-0

  24. yay, excellent puzzle, thanks!

(can i be a feminist and a mickeymousist at the same time?)

  25. oh, that sound pretty cool to me.

    mickeymousist… you rock! =D

  26. Too bad I’m always late to the party!
This looks just like my pool cover! 😉

  27. Panda! You brought me back to the moment I met you with that comment… Girl… LOL! what a sense of humor!!! =D

  28. Late again, I’m gonna start getting pink slips in my email! 😀

I would have gotten a part right, I thought the white parts were like pollen or seeds from something. LIke we say over in these parts, algo es algo 😉

    Congrats to complexify!

  29. Alieness: good memory! very funny pattern there with that crazy panda

iv0: your pink slip is a belated Valentine’s card.
