Puzzle Series: What is this, or what do you want it to be?

  1. A stream of water falling from overhead to below? Probably from some sort of hose or tubing, because it’s so well formed. Rain runoff?

  2. The texture kind of looks like a support cord…but some of the coloring matches the rocks.

Possibly a hair placed on the lens?

  3. a hair, I think the same as SpicyTuna

  4. Looks like close-up of grease pencil on a print

  5. Cola&Tuna: it’s good to see that the food and beverage people think alike…. 😉

C.Y.: Welcome. As with the other puzzles, it is not a doctored photo. (I don’t have Photoshop)

  6. Grease!
That is a nice path to follow.
Oil rather, flowing downwards. Assuming that it comes from a pressurized compartment, the velocity explaining the flow’s coherence.
    Natural oil?

  7. I think it has to be something pretty small, otherwise it would be hard to capture that translucent effect.

  8. I’m with the foodies – a hair on the lens, with a nice big mountain

  9. SpicyTuna, I supposed that the translucent effect is du to motion rather then the nature of the "stuff". Liquid in motion could explain also that kind of halo visible against the sky.

  10. Ink from a postmark on a postcard or the cover of a magazine?

  11. Is it a rock quarry? Is this the gravel flume coming off one of those rubber conveyor belt thingies?

  12. Telstar Logistics – I think you’ve gotten it. It looks exactly like a pebble stream against a rock face background..

  13. Bingo Telstar Logistics… and how appropriate! I was thinking of you and your specialized vehicle as I was driving past all the no trespassing signs and large trucks in the quarry. You inspired me to drive various places and see what happens.

It is a rock quarry along I-80 East of Salt Lake City. I was driving along and saw "quarry exit" and had to check it out….

The rocks are in motion and the translucent effect is from the air gaps between them. And the "halo" that OldCola noticed in the Notes is dust blowing off the rocks as they start to fall from above.

The other guesses were very clever indeed.

  14. Very cool. Can’t wait for the next one.

  15. Hey, I like this game! And glad you were inspired to push just a little bit farther… that’s always where the interesting stuff lies.

  16. damn! I’ve been out all day… Too bad I missed it…

    Congrats Telstar! 🙂

  17. That is, or was a perfect example of a ‘Z fold’ (the older rock layer is on TOP of the younger layer below). This was my favorite Geological feature of weekly trips in Parleys Canyon. It is gone now thanks to the Bulldozers and dynomite.
I will take a photo of aftermath next week, and provide a link..
    Gonna go dry my eyes…
