Experimental Sub dive in Monterey Bay. In a radical redesign of the submarine, it “flies” underwater like a plane rather than using ballast like a blimp. The designer thinks that a variation of this design can reach the bottom of the deepest trench in the ocean.

  1. Wicked! Does it come in other colors? I rather have this than a Hummer anyday!

  2. any color, as long as it’s blue.

    Open Hatch

The super deep one in development is red, methinks.

  3. Interesting concept. My gut reaction is to be a little leary of so many complex curves in a vehicle designed to "fly" through the Marianas where the pressure on the hull at 10,900 m is roughly equivalent to 1100 atmospheres (1.129×10^8 Newtons/square meter or 16,300 psi) .

  4. The blue and yellow external parts are fairings that do not see a pressure differential. Most of the inner body (with the working components) is unpressurized. Only the two cast aluminum "body bags" with domes are under pressure and are served by a diving rebreather.

And the super-deep design is a variant on this one. They claim Challenger is the only sub that can go to 36,000 ft. And they plan to go
