Yes. the ants must be abated.
very funny and direct. =)
I was wondering how this pattern emerges from thousands of separate ant activities…. pheremone trail -> shortest path reinforcement. Meanwhile, something hardens the surface (ant piss?) making the path over the food tough to eat, thus encouraging foraging in from the edges and tunnelling to get more surface area.
If surface area maximization emerges from these simple rules, then there is an elegant surface area comparison to the cortex…. the human neocortex is the width of 6 playing cards and the size of a large dinner napkin, folded into our skull (from On Intelligence).
What leaps to my mind, perhaps inappropriately based on the thumbnail image, is paleodictyon nodosum.
Is that a natural meandering or was there human involvement in what the ants were doing? Anyway it’s really cool.
hifi: the pattern was totally natural and emergent. The reason it got so complex is that our house was empty for about a week of vacation. Otherwise, the project would have been truncated before the full glory became apparent….
In my prior comment, I hypothesize what might have happened… but it’s just a guess.
There are a million reasons to love this. Great title, great concept, great shot and it’s all natural!
Anyone else see a question mark in the shadow?
Congratulations! This image is currently (or was recently) one of
Flickr’s Top 10 most interesting photos for 09 Dec 2004. (It is/was on
page one of the calendar view.) Would you please add it to the Top 10
Interestingness pool? It would be a great addition!
I believe what you see is the ants creating non-overlapping trails to food. An artifact of them leaving a sented trail for the others that says,"this way".
Not unsimmilar to nerve path development.
thought you might be interested in how this scientist has been researching the nests of Pogonomyrmex badius.
The experiment is undergoing in the "kitchen laboratory".Will see what comes out =)
But I came across another "emergent cortex’s metaphor", in Paris :
Emerging cortex are everywhere… =)
(Great reading on the Edge Thanks ; )
A new article dealing with similar concepts, coincidently with art from Jurvetson: seedmagazine.com/content/article/ants_and_neurons/
very interesting! thanks. So many echoes of curiosities of mine.
They call the hive mind "swarm smarts" and ponder the "different levels of complexity and across different scales of space and time" –> My blog on this
And then the reference to GEB and group decision making… spooky!
Sweet swarmers… Cool visual coincidence, i was with Deborah last week in Switzerland, exploring the idea of a Game of Drone. Organizing a tournament, using cooperative flying floating and diving Drones, to simulate and explore coopetition and swarm communication, during her stay next week in Paris… She is such a wo
nderful and passionate person ! Her curiosity is viral : )
