(This Photo: Book Shelf, Paper and Wood, by Pascal Soboll. Installed at IDEO.)

IDEO hosted a dinner presentation by photographer, and TED Prize winner, Edward Burtynsky.

He has a wonderful series of photos on the theme of nature transformed through industry, with an emphasis on the age of oil, and on photos of immense scale. The enigma of beauty pervades his works, from shipbreaking to quarries. (He hasn’t covered the strip mine in the middle of Silicon Valley yet. =)

Check out his Three Gorges Dam portfolio. It is the world’s largest construction project. “When they filled the reservoir, scientists on the other side of the planet could detect an induced wobble in the Earth’s rotation. It will generate the equivalent electricity of 18 nuclear power plants. In 6 months, China relocated 1.2 million people and leveled 11 cities in the flood plain.”

Another quote from the evening: “Stills give veracity to reality.”

  1. Even after reading your really nice write up about Pascal Soboll’s bookshelf, I still can’t help but think it’s 90 degrees off.

  2. Intriguing! I still have to post my photos of the DFJ library to the bookshelf project.

Also: Ed Burtynsky? I love his work. I was looking at a couple of his quarry pieces at a gallery in San Francisco — so impressed.

Ooops, this is actually Caterina here…I’m using Stewart’s laptop since I am at the airport and only his computer has the T Mobile password in the browser memory.

  3. Pascal created this bookshelf as a Master’s project at Stanford’s product design program. The books, cut in two on a bandsaw, make the shelves. He was quite surprised about how upsetting it was for people to see books cut up. Some things really are sacred.

  4. See also, shelves and furniture made from books from an artist in Berkeley…

  5. What a great idea! I think i’ll defiantly have to make some shelves like these for my new flat, along with one of these photo frames — anyone else spotted any other nice DIY projects?
