The what of this puzzle is easy; it’s a lizard from the backyard. But how was this Terminator photo taken?

(not a Photoshop job)

  1. A laser, between 635nm and 685nm, is being aimed into his eye, which has a reflective membrane in it.

  2. Very cool looking lizard. We get mostly geckos, chameleons and skinks around our part of the country. Nothing around here has such pronounced scales.

  3. Very accurate and relevant observations, but…. most strangely…. there is no reflection off the eye!

  4. Perhaps his eyes are closed and we’re seeing the laser illuminating the eyelid?

  5. the guy swallowed the laser, turned on.

    bad joke, who´s next?! 0-P

  6. It’s an expired lizard, and one fiber optic fiber has been "inserted", and red light passed through the fiber.

  7. Bingo Vanita + Rocketeer! Vanita is correct that it is a dead lizard…. very dead…. the ants have hollowed it out. (It’s like a lizard on a diet, and that is why the scales stick out).

    But there is no optical fiber. Rocketeer is correct that there is a red laser aimed into the eye, but it’s the other eye. The laser is shining into the eye socket from the far side. It shines through and illuminates the interior of the skull. (If you look very carefully, you can see some faint red glow spots shining through the top of the head).

    I’ll post some other views of this mean looking critter.

  8. Bravo Vanita! Very clever Jervetson!

  9. Good teamwork, it took us both Rocketeer! ;-}

    Jurvetson – I keep thinking about the ants brandishing their many fists and cursing your name for making off with their lizard snack. …And at Thanksgiving time too.. Maybe you should toss them a peace offering. ;-}

    That was a fun puzzle, but then they all are!

    It lives and lases

    "The first living laser is nothing to be afraid of. It’s just a single cell pulsing with light that may lead to new ways of probing microscopic realms. And maybe — just maybe — laser bunnies."
