DANGER: Red marks the spot of a land mine.

In Autumn, the plant’s normal reaction is to turn red or brown when subjected to stressful conditions such as cold or drought. This weed has been genetically modified to change colors only in the presence of nitrogen-dioxide, a marker for landmines or other unexploded ordinance. The plant is also made to be sterile. The application would be to release the seeds from a crop duster over a former battleground area, and let the plants grow, marking the threats. Initial tests will be in Bosnia, Sri Lanka and Sub-Saharan Africa.

The hope is that this will be more effective than the dogs and metal detectors used today.

“Experts believe that there are more than 1 billion unexploded landmines in over 75 countries worldwide, and it is estimated that a landmine kills or injures someone every 20 minutes, usually children or teenagers.” (source)

  1. Brilliant! I hope the tests go well so they can use it everywhere it’s needed.

  2. What a fantastic thing… So simple.

  3. I’d thought that NO2 was a gas at standard temp. and pressure?

Chemistry is amazing stuff. N20 makes us laugh. NO2 kills us.

  4. Right, you want the gas to evaporate out of the landmines so that it can be detected above.

Watch out for lethal subscript stutters… 😉

  5. Won’t the NO2 also dissolve in the water, and thence be absorbed by the wiggle planty-wanty? The cress stuff acts a bit like litmus paper.

This is so good. When I was in Laos you could hear distant explosions every half hour and see mine and munitions clearing vehicles roaring by all the time…

Has anyone objected to the GM nature of the plant and it being sown in the wild?

  6. I can see it now. GMO protestors not sure if they really want to march in the territories of deployment…..

  7. What a cool use of biology to help mankind! I dub it Chiapet Minefield.

  8. This and those mushrooms that eat heavy metals. I love this stuff.

  9. Are those Minesweeper numbers?

  10. So interesting. In the UK GM foods have been frowned upon but here is an example of science and nature benefitting the human race. Good notes!

  11. I can’t help thinking this wasn’t a double-blind test, from the big arrow pointing to the upper-right area! 🙂

  12. Hmm, I wonder how they’re doing with this!? Seems like a really cool idea indeed, but the only updates were in October which said pretty much the same thing, "Hey, this is cool and promising."

  13. constant reminders…

    Land Mines

  14. oh, boy, this many…will watch out.
