This is just a cheap red laser pointer.

It can create a wild array of effects when shot right into the digital camera. The effects are maximized when in full optical zoom.

I think it saturates the CCD Imager (this is a closeup of the edge of the white center).

As seen in earlier photos (with a weaker laser), there are a number of flare effects around the periphery as well.

neat, it’s also fun to use local material and put it in front of the flash as a color filter. E.g. green leaves (or if you happen to be carrying kermit the frog).

Cool image, but what’s the "illusion" in this one?

The alien smiley was more suited for the purpose, I think 😉

Group pools adjusted appropriately…. This is just a color fake at the CCD level.

Only pure red light is entering the camera.

Higher power lasers can fry pixels on the CCD. I have not had a problem with the cheap laser pointers.

Steve, have you considered other sources of light?
I have been playing with Infrared for a while and have just uploaded a couple of basic examples:
