Sony Research demonstrated real time motion capture with the EyeToy and PS2 at AC2004. This was a free space user interface like in the movie Minority Report. The Sony guy on the right is embedded in the video projection on screen, and he can grab and move items on screen by moving his hands in the air.

From the Q&A: the Clié PDA and PSP gaming platforms will merge.

  1. Must have been very interesting to see! Maybe a little bit like a magician’s work?

  2. What was the latency like? Was there any "jitter between his virtual contact points and the objects touched or dragged ?

  3. Given the distance between him and the screen, it was hard to notice the latency (since I was looking through a camera!).

It was also hard to tell if he was compensating for latency with scripted moves. If a novice from the audience was playing with it, it might have been more easily seen.

He did mention that latency and immediate feedback from motion is the critical design parameter for these systems (more than photo realism or even a direct mapping of responses).

For example, when you are controlling a full body avatar on screen with your body movements, the arms matter but the feet can be doing their own thing.
