   Oh man I’m racking my brain in with this one… So far, what it looks like to me, is like a close up shot of the sun or an illuminated yo-yo… but I’ll get back to you on this.

   Bingo! iv0 got it within 10 hours, as recognized by the alieness. The international contingent continues to dominate.

   It is a simple photograph, but beguiling and fascinating (at least to me =). For example, OldCola, there is no object. (“There is no spoon”). It’s a a single point source of light and a camera.

   More specifically, it is a red laser from the back of a DVD player, the “digital optical out” on modern CD and DVD players. I was trying to fix a DVD player and say this light shooting out the back (the lens cover was missing). It normally couples into a fiber link to the audio amp.

   I pressed the camera lens right up to the back of the player. It was extremely sensitive to angle and lateral shifts because the laser is highlighting irregularities in the optical lens array (scattering, reflections, imperfections in the lenses and coatings, other?). The effect became more pronounced when the camera was in 3x optical zoom. I suspect that different cameras would produce different images. It’s like a holographic xray of the soul of the machine.

   The scatter of points in the bottom left reminded me of TEM diffraction imaging of the atomic lattice (here’s an asbestos example).

   I’ll post some other examples of slight camera tilts (e.g., Nuclear Mutant and Napster Cat).
