Talk about adding insult to injury…
"Hello, Mrs. Duckworth? Yes, we’re afraid your husband touched the tramwire wires. Yes. Ma’am, he was killed instantly. We’re terribly sorry ma’am.
"Now, we must inform you Mrs. Duckworth, that there’s a $200.00 fine, and as the caretaker of your husband’s estate…
"Mrs. Duckworth..? Hello..?"
This remind me of… this:
"Your food stamps will be stopped effective March 1992 because we received notice that you passed away. May God bless you. You may reapply if there is a change in your circumstances."
-Department of Social Services, Greenville, South Carolina
"If somebody has a bad heart, they can plug this jack in at night as they go to bed and it will monitor their heart throughout the night. And the next morning, when they wake up dead, there’ll be a record." Mark S. Fowler, FCC Chairman
OMG, that’s even better than alligator molesting! 😀
Thanks for the link, Alieness!
Please look here… NEWCASTLE TRAMWAY
"In the first half of the twentieth century, the tram was the dominant form of public transport in many of the urban areas of the North-East of England. These images from my collection are mostly from the interconnected Gateshead and Newcastle tramway systems, with a few others from North Shields, South Shields and Sunderland."
Here some more modern pictures.
I haven´t gone further in my search because it seems to be this all about. As you suggested, J. 0-)
Btw, is jamis still searching for his cat?… 0-P
Now… maybe this is not a sign… this is the picture of a sign which was about a picture of a sign that was a picture of a frame of a VHS video cropped from a japanesse tourist going down the Newcastle trams 50 years ago but his cammera was so modern that the shoot looks up to date…
|-)
That is the universal symbol for money. Doesn´t mean only dollars. Such a common confusion US people help to spread. In most countries money figures are represented that way.
Anyway… you know M71, I don´t care neither when nor where. It makes me and 13000 people laugh and it´s more than enough for me. =)
No, dear, no problem at all. Problems are other things far away from this place. |-)
Good luck with your quest.
Taken from the World Wide Words newsletter –
Newcastle tram depot Michael Mellor and others doubt the veracity of the sign mentioned in the Sic! column last week. He points out that the depot closed in 1950, 16 years before Australia converted its currency to dollars. It looks very much like a hoax, despite the convincing photograph posted online.
Gustavo: thanks! Did the article disappear? The selection you give sounds like M71’s point.
My theory: it was the American tourists that kept getting fried, so they tried to make it easier on them to pay. So the current signs have the Visa and Mastercard logos.
This just in from Jamis, which clears everything up:
"The story of the sign is long and sordid, like life. I will fill you in as it develops."
And why are we so Australia-centric? Have we checked the tramways at these places that take dollars (or dollarettes):

Newcastle. Ontario, Canada. 43.55 N 78.35 W

Is this real? The number of view I see is 23841. Can this be possible? Wow. Congratulation.
Your close encounter with Elastigirl has almost 25.000 views up to date. How could it be otherwise?
Odd enough I think I remember the day you posted that. It was mother´s day here. It was a year ago, it was a very tough weekend for me. How could I foresee that day that would be happening one year after? Life is pandora´s box.
If it wasn’t for the fine, I would touch them… consider this for the new group that I made for times like this one, It’s All Wrong Thanks!
