Is ugliness a requirement for these faces to work?!

Here’s a short video of the face from Human Emulation Robotics. She reacts to human faces and motion.

To date, these types of robots all remind me of all of those funny old newsreels of inventors trying to make flying machines that work the exact same way as birds.
Success is going to come when roboticists abandon the awesomely complex subtleties of Nature’s way and develop something simple, a brand-new approach that works just as well if not better. You can’t build a mechanical wing system that’s as light and strong and heavily-articulated as a bird’s…but why bother, when a fixed wing of the correct shape and profile can generate lift just by moving forward through the air?
If we can be so successful at intiuting what’s going on in our pets’ minds, who’s to say that there can’t be a brand-new way of communicating context and emotions that’s uniquely a robot’s?
Here’s hoping that one day, I’ll scoot my chair up to my Windows machine and with one glance know that damn…the computer’s in a pissy mood and I bet it won’t be able to mount my network servers and printers today…I’ll just launch a diagnostic and go out for waffles.
