So many of our perceptions of the world are subtly shaped by the arbitrary convention that North is up on globes and maps. Flip your globes and maps to see it more clearly…

    Tu es an excellent sorcier!

  2. Mafalda (a cartoon character from Quino) already did it the same joke

  3. What is the punch line?

  4. Mafalda is my heroine since I am 7 years old…

So nice that morrisey brings her here. He is veeeery right. In Mafalda´s first year of publishing, 1964/65, there was a secuence about her turning upside down her own globe.

    Great memories!!!

Mafalda talking as usual to the world, this time telling it about the importance of respecting the 10 Universal Rights of Children in a global campaign for UNICEF

    Here the list of characters

  5. We have a solution in the antipodes.

  6. thanks for the link! Those are some great maps.

  7. Both poles are up. But the world spins one way, between the poles, so it’s obviously rolling which is why the globe’s equator should be on the ground. Then its north and south are left and right, facing the real north and south. Then all is well.

Edit: Oh shoot, I forgot about how to put the words on. Write for room, I say.

  8. Do globes south of the Equator show the South Pole as ‘up’? Do they learn the countries’ shapes 180 degrees from those north of the Equator.

  9. I work with an Aussie. He definitely sees the world "upside-down". Then again, he thinks Vegemite is high cuisine.

  10. What a wonderful memory! *happy alieness* |-D
