Vana Tallinn is even prettier at night. The Three Sisters hotel is just through the arch.

  1. Steve, is there some any information you can give about this place? A story or something? I´d love to know some more about it. Tks.

  2. The Great Coastal Gate (Suur Rannavärav) and Fat Margaret’s Tower (Paks Margareeta) were built as a defense on the seaward, northern side of the Old Town, near the harbour.

During the reconstruction of the gate in the early 16th century, the cannon tower Fat Margaret was added. It got its name from the fact that it was indeed the stoutest tower in the city wall. Through history, the cannon tower has also served as a storehouse for gunpowder and weapons.

The newest hotel is in an older set of three buildings from 1362. Three Sisters is a magical place to stay, especially in July. =)

  3. The blank wall to the street, bane of new urbanists everywhere, somehow comes off very human here. I wonder if it is just a question of scale (and placement of the windows), or if the almost organic texture plays a role …

  4. During the mid nineties, this was my expat hangout. Some Americans set up Fat Margaret;s, a bar that was indoors next to the Maritime Museum and had a wonderful courtyard. They just had a ten year reunion that I couldn’t make, a place of great friendship. Wondeful irony that its first use was fending off foreign invaders.

  5. Wow, this is a treat! Thank you Steve for listening to my request and thank you Stewart and Ross, too! Now I have a closer idea of what that wonderful place is.. and has been. It is time to plan what is GOING to be. I am adding it to the places I plan to go in some time. Soon.

    Aitah!

  6. Browsing and found your pictures – very nice…

Especially considering we must have just missed each other taking pictures; I was there at the same time, but headed back for Finland as dusk set 😉

  7. Wow…. cool stuff. Here’s a real time web cam of Tallinn for the home sick. (Thanks Dad, for the pointer)

  8. Lovely shot with the feeling of a wonderful summer evening!
