Too many balls in the air. The one that jumps off the poster is a mystery… it was not a photoshop job.

  1. Oh, and the poster is one huge piece of Polaroid film exposed by a huge camera

    .

  2. Holy canoli! That’s a mighty big piece of film.

  3. Talk about large format film… wow!
I bet it would be expensive to have photos like this taken.

  4. OK, Pandarine…. I see your little note up there…. So, how does the pink ball jump off the page? Maybe someone threw a ball and I did not know it…

  5. The artist William Wegman uses large-format Polaroid cameras for his work. There are only a handful of these cameras in the country, and they have to be rented from Polaroid. And yes, the film is expensive! (But the image quality is impressive.)

As for the extra ball–maybe it’s a cutout pasted onto the photo after the fact.

  6. Maybe…. but I think I would have noticed that. I think the most likely answer is that someone threw a ball into the frame, and we didn’t notice because we are looking at the camera.

In the poster shot, we were trying to capture juggling in action, with an insane number of balls. (per your point about cost, we got one attempt).

We threw as many balls as we could hold in the air, and we had two professional jugglers (who we knew would be there from the conference agenda) throw balls from the sides simultaneously.

Strangley, all of these balls clustered around me like moths to the flame. I must have some toy magnetism. 😉

  7. How about another picture of you holding the picture… and then a few more iterations…

This scenario fascinated me since I was 7 and saw this happening on a Land-O-Lakes butter container.

  8. The cats beat us to it.

    Does this bring buttery flashbacks?

  9. ..so that’s what they call? – A Balls Up!
